You Will Be Responsible For:

  • Performs an initial health intake data including medical and mental health conditions, communicable and/or other infectious diseases, current medications taken by inmate, mental status, current use of alcohol and other drugs on new inmates

  • Responds to medical incidents during shift and provides medical care to inmates and/or the supervision of other detention medical personnel responding to an emergency

  • Determine the need for attention of a health care provider and schedules medical visits as needed

  • See inmates for medical emergencies and determine the priority of care needed. Provide emergency first aid as needed including BLS

  • Will consult the medical provider on healthcare issues for direction and treatment plan

  • Review/screen all written medical request daily and makes appropriate referrals for non-emergent illness and injuries

  • Coordinate the examination of inmates reporting for sick call. Gather information and assess vital signs, height, and weight and document in the inmate medical record for review

  • Coordinate and/or schedule physician, dental, mental health, and obstetrics services as needed

  • Arranges patient referrals to appropriate appointments, specialty physicians, and/or hospital visits

  • Arranges for radiology and lab services to be performed as ordered. Draw blood and obtain other specimens and preparation for transport of specimens as ordered by physician/practitioner

  • Performs tuberculosis skin testing and resulting on inmates and maintain in inmate medical record.

  • Provide wound care, apply and/or change bandages/dressings according to physician orders or protocol

  • Initiate and provide care to inmates according to medical standing orders

  • Maintain medical records on each inmate keeping it confidential and separate from the inmate’s custody record. Records must be maintained for a period of 7 years

  • Interpret/review physician orders and provide inmates care as per the physician/health care providers orders

  • Order and maintain inmate medications. Return unused medications to pharmacy

  • Order, maintain, and restock supplies including diabetic supplies for inmate and supplies for exam/medical room

  • Check expiration dates for expired medications and supplies

  • Administer medications to inmates per MAR and dispense over-the-counter medications per protocols

  • Monitor and maintain refrigerator temperatures daily and maintain logs. Clean and inspect medication refrigerators cleaned and inspected monthly by medical staff

  • Monitor, inspect, and maintain emergency medical supplies monthly and as needed

  • Note any special dietary needs or allergies and inform dietary and food services

  • Provide inmates with patient education and/or discharge planning and information

  • Provide and maintain scheduled list of on call health care provider including date, names, and telephone numbers

  • Follow safety rules, procedures and other regulations required by the Hardee County Sherriff Department

  • Follow HIPPA privacy regulations

  • Will be on call after-hours as scheduled. May be required to go into the jail after normal work hours for evaluation and triage of an inmate’s problem. Will make recommendations for health care and referrals based on needs of inmate and health care providers orders

  • Must treat all staff and inmates in a professional, ethical, and tactful manner

  • Experience in inmate nursing


  • Minimum of Technical Certificate in Practical Nursing


  • One year experience as an LPN

  • Previous healthcare experience

  • Previous experience in designated department


  • Current Florida LPN License

  • BLS


  • IV Certification within 90 days of employment

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of a registered nurse, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides fundamental physical and psychological nursing care to patients as part of the multidisciplinary team in accordance with the hospital’s mission, Florida Jail Standards, Hardee County Jail, physician, and patient expectations. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) shall be responsible and accountable for making decisions that are based upon the individual’s educational preparation and experience in nursing.
